Social Media Stampede
By Brian Oster - Business Development 4.23.10
Twitter released their user statistics earlier this month, sharing that they have more than 105 million registered users. They grew more than 1,000% in the last twelve months and new users are signing up at the rate of 300,000 per day. Are you or your business on social media yet?
Facebook’s recent blogs tell us they have more than 400 million active users. Here is another fact for us in business: more than 20 million people become fans of pages each day. Is your business there yet?
You may admittedly be wondering where this social media stampede came from. And you may be wondering: Is my business missing out on a critical fan base? Many big box stores have already embraced social media and there are case studies available en mass showing successful use by businesses.
Join the Masses or Get Out of the Way?
Some experts compare social media, or the term Web 2.0, to what the Internet was in the mid-90’s. Back then many people said the Internet would pass and they didn’t see the need to spend money on what they saw as a fad. The same is true today, some businesses believe social media is not for them. They don’t see the benefits and are not going to invest the time required for this marketing tool.
Social media reaches across all generations and has grown faster than any marketing tool in history. The statistics speak for themselves – there are more than 140 million unique visitors going to these social media sites in the U.S. alone.
Follow My Business
Whether you have a business page on social media or are considering it soon, here is one last fact to consider. The top two reasons people become fans or follow businesses on social media are to 1) hear about specials, sales and new deals, and 2) learn about new products, services and timely information.
