Observation - Photo Sharing

By Nehlsen Staff  1.4.10

Over the holiday break, I made an observation. While waiting to see Santa with my two year old, I noticed a number of parents and grandparents, also waiting in line, showing pictures of their other kids/grandkids on their various mobile devices –smart phones, camera phones, and even some iPods.

Is the accordion-fold wallet-sized picture album ‘brag book’ being replaced? I certainly think so. And with more and more of the (cough, cough) older generations hopping on the social media bandwagon, sharing pictures and news of kids/grandkids has never been faster or easier. Instead of flipping through pages of purse-sized photo albums, we scroll through image galleries on our smart phones and facebook pages. Instead of describing something funny the kids did, we share a video on our iPod or YouTube channel.

Another interesting point to the observation is that dads and grandpas are sharing photos as well. It used to be that dads had one or two photos of their kids in their wallets –mom being the one who had the larger photo collection, stored away discretely in her purse – but mobile devices and social media has done away with that, opening a new photo/information-sharing world for dads and (I’ll say it again) older generations alike.

Being a member of the "older" generation to which you refer - I agree! This is the way that many grandparents are sharing photos these days. I don't - because I don't have a fancy phone plus - I have no grandchildren. But - it's amazing to see this transition from the wallet-worn pics of the past to the most currently candid shots of kids and grandkids. It's great! I hadn't thought of this before so thanks for bringing it up. It's a pretty easy way for seniors to get involved in a form of technology and want to do even more.
