How do I use social media for my business?

By Lee Brinckley - Web Marketing Director  10.21.09

It seems like everyone is ‘tweeting’ these days…and I am not. It also seems like everyone is either a ‘Fan’ or ‘Friend’ of someone…and I am not. But everyone is telling me that I need to do all of this, especially as a business-owner. Otherwise I may be losing out on potential business.

You may agree that you need to engage in social media, yet you don’t have the foggiest clue where to begin. It is overwhelming.

Lee, our web marketing director, will be giving a presentation on using social media for small businesses on November 3rd at the Bettendorf Library through the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce “Knowledge at Noon” series. He will define what social media is in layman’s terms and how to get started.

Common questions and topics that will be addressed will include:

  1. What is social media?
  2. Why should I use it?
  3. What is the difference between Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn?
  4. Which social media platform is right for me?
  5. How will it benefit my business?
  6. Case studies of small businesses using social media
  7. Debunking common social media myths
  8. How do I start using it?

By the end of the presentation, you will have a basic understanding of social media and how to get started. Any overwhelming fears of social media will be alleviated by the presentation with a question and answer session at the end.

You can register online on the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce website or call 563.355.4753 for the November 3rd “Knowledge at Noon”.

This is a good question. It could be as little as a 1/2 hour a day to monitoring it throughout the day and engaging with other users as needed.

With social media, there is no cookie-cutter solution. It depends on the goals of the company that wants to use it, because each company has different objectives, audience, etc. Is it for customer relations, PR, or recruitment? Maybe you need a different account (or social media platforms) for certain products or services. If that is the case, it is necessary to train more than one individual to maintain the social media according to their department.

Thanks again for the knowledge you shared last week - very informative! One question that you didn’t address at the seminar is, what type of maintenance is required to keep these sites active? 10 hours a week, more, less?
