Are You Missing the Right Ad Space?

By Brian Oster - Business Development  4.13.10

Virtually anything anywhere can be used for advertising purposes. Add the fact that clothing is branded with logos, company names and slogans, and anyone can also be used for advertising. Are you missing out on the right advertising space for your organization?

Let’s assume you know who your ideal customer is. And let’s also assume you know what differentiates you from the competition. Now the hardest question to answer of any marketing campaign is: where does your typical customer spend their time and get their news or information?

Social media will continue to grow and I believe will become a necessary staple in the future, similar to what the Internet is today. But let’s think outside the box for a few minutes.

How do I think outside the box?

It may not be easy to think outside the box, if you don’t know what options are out there. Start thinking about what unique advertising has caught your attention. We’ve all peeled the Dole or Chiquita stickers off our bananas, but have you seen these banana stickers from ABC and the Super MonkeyBall Wii game?

I’m sure you have seen your fair share of vehicle wraps. But Sea World takes this idea to the next level with their Shamu the Beetle driving around town.

These above ideas may not be the best vehicles (pun intended) for your advertising, but they are unique and positioned in a place where they get noticed.

What distinctive ad space might you be missing? Here are a few simple, diverse ideas to consider: wall paintings, Internet radio spots, downtown street lamp signs, OpenTable (Internet and phone application for restaurant reservations), cinema advertisements, stickers on your local newspapers, printed rack cards and bus stop benches.

Looking for something bigger or more striking? How about seatback tray tables, shopping cart handles, floors of grocery stores and doors of bathroom stalls? Anywhere you look and any place you touch could be the next best place for your advertisement.

Speaking of grocery stores

Not sure if you've paid attention to the back of your grocery receipt lately, but it's becoming prime "real estate" for advertisers. I've been noticing all sorts of businesses placing ads on the back of my local grocery store's receipts. And the types of businesses even rotate, so the variety is plentiful. In fact, I've even cut off a coupon for the car wash! Great idea!

Actually, I think it's a great idea! It's the "banana blitz" so ties in greatly with the product. Plus, maybe it will get the kids with Mom at the market - who greatly drive food purchases - to toss a healthy snack into the cart.

Monkey Ball Bananas

I actually saw those exact banana stickers at the grocery store the other day; I love the idea of promoting Monkey Ball with produce stickers, but promoting a video game on a 'health food' seems a bit counterintuitive...
